Mill Certification

SWS’s Mill Certification Policy is to provide Mill Certificates for all steel utilized in the production of SWS stud and track products. Mill Certificates will be provided free-of-charge upon the customer’s request, as required for compliance with the construction documents. Mill Certificates must be requested at the time of order placement and will be sent with each shipment. This policy does NOT APPLY to accessory items such as flat strap, angles, E-Studs, notched tracks, beads, and trim, which do not require Mill Certificates.

Mill Certification

Mill Certificates shall:

  1. Be 100% Traceable to each stud and track member and will be marked in accordance with ASTM C955 (Structural) and ASTM C645 (Non-Structural). The slit coil number will also be visible on each stud and track member. Pieces shorter than 6’ may not have ink jetting on each and every piece.
  2. Be formatted in a Certified Test Report.
  3. The SWS Mill Certificates shall contain the following information:
    • Heat Number
    • Coil Number
    • Nominal Thickness
    • Galvanized Coating weight
    • Yield Strength
    • Tensile Strength
    • Elongation %
    • Test Standard A370
    • Be available for Structural and Non-Structural stud and track framing members only.
  4. IF requested can be either sent via email or included with shipments, in some cases both. Otherwise Mil Certifications are kept on file per standards and readily available if requested.
  5. Mill Certificates are kept for every coil and maintained on file by SWS Panel & Truss in South Gate

Code Approvals

SWS’s steel framing products are manufactured according to the AISI specifications for the Design of Cold-Formed Steel Structural Member, AISI S100-2012 AISI.

Products manufactured by SWS are recognized by the IAPMO Uniform Evaluation Service’s (UES) Report #307 and under the tolerances of a code compliance program. Code approvals include 2012/2015 IBC, 2013 CBC, and 2015 IRC. The IAPMO Uniform Evaluation Service (UES) provides evaluation reports of the highest integrity
and provides manufacturers with a fully-qualified and accredited alternative to those issued by ICC. In addition, SWS’s code compliance program is accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and certified by a third-party inspection agency (Smith Emery Laboratories).

Code Approvals

SWS demonstrates code compliance through our participation in a third-party Code Compliance Certification program, administered by IAPMO Uniform Evaluation Service. In addition, SWS maintains a Uniform Evaluation Service(UES) Report #307.

The IAPMO Uniform Evaluation Service and ICC Evaluation Service are two of the better-known third party code compliance certification services and are both ANSI-accredited to ISO/IEC 17065 (Conformity Assessment – requirements for bodies certifying products, processes, and services) to provide building-code product certifications (ICC-ES, IAPMO UES). Both companies also have a public acceptance or evaluation criteria process, which includes an evaluation committee made up of building enforcement officials. These officials evaluate the proposed criteria, listen to expert and industry input, and only approve the criteria by a majority vote if products evaluated on those criteria will meet code intent. This is similar to how the codes and standards are developed — a transparent public process and majority approval of requirements rather than just the opinion of one or a few individuals. Protective Coatings

Structural framing products are available with a variety of protective coatings that meet the CP60 coating protection level of requirements of AISI S200 and ASTM C955. These coatings may include G60, A60, AZ50 or GF30, all of which satisfy the above referenced standards. Certified G90 coatings are an enhanced option that can be requested for highly corrosive environments. EZ Stud by SWS can supply a specific or enhanced coating to meet specific project requirements.

LEED & Recycled Content

SWS is pleased to join the efforts of the U.S. Green Building Council/(USGBC) and LEED ® program that improves environmental and economic performance of commercial, industrial and residential buildings. The LEED ® program certifies buildings that meet standards utilizing energy, environmental design, and products as defined the LEED® rating system. The use of EZ Stud by SWS products can help contribute points in specific categories.

EZ Stud by SWS products contain the following percentages of recycled steel content:

  • Total Recycled Content: 36.9%.
  • Post-Consumer: 19.8%.
  • Pre-Consumer: 14.4%.

USGBC is the nationally accepted benchmark for the improvement of sustainable design, environmental performance, and economic impact for commercial buildings. Steel is recognized for its important environmental attributes, particularly its high recycled content and reclamation rate. SWS supports the increasing demands for LEED certification, operation with established and innovative practices, standards, materials and technologies.

Cold Formed Steel/(CFS) offers the strength, durability and stability needed for framing applications. From a sustainable construction standpoint, the material is ideal for new construction and commercial renovation projects. Unlike wood, it’s noncombustible, corrosion- and mold-resistant, termite-proof, made with high recycled content, reduces on-site construction waste, and can be recycled at the end of the structure’s life cycle. Cold-formed steel framing products are 100% recyclable and can be locally or regionally sourced for most projects.

Cold formed steel (CFS) is recognized in all major green building standards and rating programs, including the National Green Building Standard (ICC-700) for residential buildings, ASHRAE Standard 189.1 for commercial construction, the International Green Construction Code (IgCC), and the US Green Building Council’s LEED program, which covers all types of buildings.

SWS presents the following LEED certification letters to meet your LEED-related documentary requirements for submission of Cold-Formed Steel Framing Products.

The USGBC requires BOTH (1) compliance information for products used, and (2) a statement of the manufacturer’s locations and efforts to preserve the environment through their operational actions.

The attached letter is supplied to further assist you and minimize your efforts in gathering documentation for LEED-related projects.

Please present the following certification letter for all LEED-related projects on which you are bidding or for which your end customer is seeking LEED certification after installations are complete.
